Spinal Diseases

Lumbar Disc(Slipped Disc) In the vertebrae, there is a soft tissue that acts as a cushion in between bones, and it is called disc. In the middle of disc, there is a substance called ‘vertebral pulp,’ which is surrounded by a membrane called ‘annulus fibrosus.’ Lumbar disc is a disease causing backache as this vertebral pulp sticks out of annulus fibrosus and presses nerve.
Disc Internal Derangement Disc internal derangement is a disease causing backache as the disc degenerates, and is completely different from lumbar disc. In lumbar disc, the disc sticks out of the spine and presses nerves, but disc internal derangement means that the disc itself is impaired. This usually occurs among people in their 20s to 50s, and the common symptom is chronic pain that disrupts daily life. Especially since the symptoms of this disease do not show on X-ray or CT scans and their causes are not known, patients usually go through many different treatments and then realize the correct disease name later. Even if the symptoms of chronic pain do not improve after receiving a treatment that is conserved for more than 8 to 12 weeks, it might be a disc internal derangement.
Spinal Stenosis As one ages and the ligament or joint between bones gradually increases, the spinal canal that the nerves go through narrows and pressures the nerves, causing this disease (Of course, there are also inborn causes ). While lumbar disc occurs among people in relatively young ages of 20s to 40s, spinal stenosis occurs in people after their 50s. If the spinal canal is severely narrowed, this might cause the paralysis of urine and feces functions and sexual dysfunction.
Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fracture One of the most common fractures occurring due to osteoporosis is spinal fracture. Osteoporosis is terrifying, because one’s bones weaken easily due to osteoporosis and are easily fractured even by small shocks. Especially, elders easily fracture themselves even if they fall down lightly, and the main cause of this is osteoporosis. Most spinal fractures make the vertebrae collapse and arouse pain in the waist, hip, and on the side. When a compression fracture occurs, one’s back bents and fracture mostly occurs over a long period of time, so one gradually becomes bent even more.
